Turn your smartphone into a USB FIDO2 security key that aids in enabling passwordless authentication, ensuring the security of your data across all devices.

IDmelon allows you to transform your all-in-one smartphone into a FIDO security key. Following installation and activation of IDmelon on your smartphone, the hassle of managing passwords for Windows login, online accounts, and applications on your PC will be eliminated. Instead, you can utilize passkeys for secure and convenient logins across all your devices without the need to register credentials anew on each device. Passkeys can also be utilized to access accounts and applications on iOS devices, iPads, and tablets, providing the ability to generate, store, and manage passkeys for seamless data access on any device at any time.

IDmelon is fully compatible with various platforms supporting FIDO2 like GitHub, Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft products such as Outlook and Office, and many others.

To set up your smartphone as a security key or passkey manager, you will receive an activation link or button via email. Once the activation process on your smartphone is completed, it will be ready to operate in conjunction with either IDmelon Pairing Tool or IDmelon Reader.

You can connect your smartphone to your PC using the IDmelon Pairing Tool desktop/laptop app. Installation of the IDmelon Pairing Tool on the computer is required to establish this connection. Subsequently, scanning a QR code displayed on the PC screen once will enable logging in with just a single tap on a push notification on your paired smartphone.

Note: The IDmelon Pairing Tool is compatible with macOS and Windows 10 or later (Entra ID, formerly known as Azure AD, has merged).

Permission Note: The IDmelon Pairing Tool requests permission to utilize the smartphone camera solely for QR code scanning purposes during the pairing process.

For an enhanced Tap & Login process, IDmelon Reader is necessary. This plug-and-play hardware can be inserted into USB ports on PCs. Shared workspaces benefit from the convenience of using IDmelon Reader where logging in becomes as simple as tapping your smartphone against the Reader to receive a login notification.

Permission Note: Grant IDmelon app permission to access your smartphone's Bluetooth exclusively for authentication purposes to utilize IDmelon Reader.

There may be instances where your workplace implements IDmelon and requires you to configure your smartphone as a security key for accessing specific files, emails, or applications. In such cases, an invitation email with an activation link/button will be sent to you. Installing the IDmelon app on your smartphone is essential to interact with the link/button on the same device. Alternatively, using your ID badge or NFC card as a FIDO security key might be an option for this purpose. Visit our website at https://www.idmelon.com/ for further details.

Pros

  • Enables phishing-resistant FIDO2 passwordless authentication by turning smartphones, ID badges, NFC cards and biometrics into security keys.
  • Supports shared-device scenarios (shared PCs, shared iPads) with features like shared passkeys, one-time-use passkeys and shared-device modes suited for frontline workers.
  • Enterprise orchestration for mass rollout: automated security-key assignment, onboarding and activation that can scale and reduce deployment time and admin overhead.
  • Integrations and compatibility with major FIDO2-enabled services (Microsoft/Entra ID, GitHub, social platforms and many web/apps) and SSO/federation support for streamlined application access.
  • Multiple deployment options: smartphone-as-key (pairing tool), NFC/badge-as-key, and a plug-and-play USB Reader for tap-to-login workflows in shared environments.
  • On-premises and cloud options: recent versions add support for on-premise domains and on-premise activation links (useful for air-gapped or hybrid environments).
  • Passkey conveniences: AutoFill Passkeys support and the ability to generate/store/manage passkeys across devices to avoid repeated re-registration on new endpoints.
  • Regular app updates and active feature additions (shared device improvements, UI updates, identity verification flows), indicating active development.
  • Works with common device capabilities — uses camera for QR pairing and Bluetooth for Reader-based authentication — minimizing need for additional, specialized hardware for many scenarios.
  • Privacy/security transparency: links to End-User License Agreement and Privacy Policy available from the app description and website.

Cons

  • Some workflows require additional components (IDmelon Pairing Tool on the PC and/or IDmelon Reader hardware) which adds complexity, procurement cost, and dependence on extra software/hardware for full functionality.
  • Enterprise rollout dependency: initial activation often requires receiving an activation link/email and administrative provisioning — individual consumers may find it less straightforward to self-provision without IT support.
  • Requires device capabilities and permissions (camera for QR pairing, Bluetooth for Reader, and NFC for some badge scenarios), which may limit use on devices or in environments where those capabilities are restricted.
  • iOS app store presence shows a small number of user ratings (7) — limited public user feedback makes it harder to assess real-world reliability at scale from end-user reviews alone.
  • Some advanced or shared-device features (one-time use passkeys, shared passkeys, on-premise activations) may be enterprise-only or require specific configuration from administrators; pricing/packaging for those capabilities is not detailed on public pages.
  • Badge/NFC approach depends on existing physical access credential formats — organizations whose badges lack compatible NFC or credential data will need replacements or alternate workflows.
  • Tight integration with Microsoft/Entra ID is a benefit for many organizations but could make non-Microsoft-centric environments require extra configuration or have a less seamless experience.
  • Use of push notifications and Bluetooth introduces typical mobile attack surface/availability issues (e.g., notification delivery, Bluetooth connectivity interruptions) that can affect reliability in noisy or restricted radio environments.
